WASHINGTON (AP) __ U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley says the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, Office of Rural Development has awarded
eight grants totaling more than $3 million to Iowa through the
Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant Program.
The grants go to rural utility and telephone cooperatives who,
in turn, relend the funds to local businesses to create or retain
jobs.
Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative in Estherville will receive a $300,000 grant to enhance an existing revolving loan fund to help Spencer Industries Foundation construct a community shell building in Spencer.
The Northwest Telephone Cooperative Association in Havelock will
receive a $500,000 loan to help expand Country Maid, Inc. in West
Bend.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) __ Iowa Gov. Chet Culver has announced 35
communities will receive an estimated $12.4 million in Community
Development Block Grant funds.
The funding, obtained through the Community Facilities and
Services Fund and the Water/Sewer Fund, will pay for a variety of
projects and activities primarily benefiting low- and
moderate-income residents.
Local communities in line for some of the water and sewer funds include $300,000 for Terril, $243,000 for Melvin, and $142,000 for Superior.
Rock Valley is in line for $600,000 in community facilities funding.
The Community Facilities and Services Fund provides grants
primarily are used for day care facilities, senior centers and
vocational workshops.
Money in the Water/Sewer Fund is disbursed to improve, water and
sewage treatment facilities.
Officials say the awards are contingent upon receipt of funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
