Spencer, IA: (Mar. 20, 2014) – Drought has intensified in Kansas, threatening the wheat crop there. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report shows some 84% of the state now in a moderate to extreme drought. Kansas is the biggest U.S. grower of wheat.
Dust storms in western Oklahoma and Texas are an indication of the intensity of the drought in those areas. The Drought Monitor report says soil moisture in those areas is virtually non-existent. Rainfall over the past 90 days is just 10 percent of normal, according to the report.
