PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Connor Cook passed for a career-high 332 yards and hit Tony Lippett with a tiebreaking 25-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, leading No. 4 Michigan State to a 24-20 victory over No. 5 Stanford on Wednesday night in the 100th Rose Bowl.

Cook also threw a TD pass to Trevon Pendleton, and Jeremy Langford rushed for 84 yards and a score in the first Rose Bowl victory in 26 years for the Big Ten champion Spartans (13-1), who finished the season with 10 straight wins.

Michigan State’s defense capped its dominant season with one more smash-mouth performance during the centennial celebration of the Granddaddy of Them All.

The Spartans ended it by stopping the Pac-12 champion Cardinal (11-3) on fourth-and-1 with 1:46 to play, utterly stuffing a run play up the middle.

WELCOME HOME

Michigan State University is getting ready to welcome back the Spartans following their Rose Bowl victory.

The East Lansing school’s athletics department says fans wishing to greet the football team should wait Thursday night at the Skandalaris Football Center. People are being asked to stay away from Lansing’s airport, since access to the team isn’t planned there.

East Lansing Fire Department Lt. Chuck Gagnier tells the Lansing State Journal it was “fairly quiet” in the hometown of the Spartans afterward. WLNS-TV reports five fires, mostly furniture burned outside. WILX-TV reports extra police patrols took place.

Last month, a rowdy celebration of Michigan State’s victory over Ohio State in the Big Ten championship included dozens of fires and prompted arrests.

DANTONIO STAYING AT MSU

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio says his “intentions are to be at Michigan State” and not change jobs.

Dantonio is reportedly a coach Texas has been considering as a possible replacement for Mack Brown. After Dantonio led the Spartans to a 24-20 victory over Stanford in the Rose Bowl on Wednesday, he was asked about being linked to some high-profile positions and the possibility he could have a big raise and contract extension coming.

Dantonio said: “That’s very flattering, but it would be hard to leave these guys. So while it’s very, very flattering, my intentions are to be at Michigan State. That’s all I’ll say about those things. I’ll look forward to seeing my guys back on Monday mornings for classes.”
